For all my patients with chronic pain

Food May Be Causing Your Pain
by Tina Alvey, D.C., NTP

It's frustrating when you are doing all you know to do to get your pain under control but the pain is not resolving. We often think that it's just not the right modality or you over did it a little in the yard or it's just "arthritis". However, most inflammation in the body has a cause and we always think there's a physical reason but that may not be the case. There may be a chemical cause of your inflammation causing pain, not a foreign chemical, but the foods you might eat on any given day.

"All things being equal, the simplest answer is the right answer." Occam's Razor
We eat food usually 3 times a day. So food would be a good place to start to evaluate if it is actually causing inflammation in your body. Let's investigate 3 separate ideas.
Step 1. Remove night shade vegetables from the diet for about 3 weeks (21 days). These include tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. (These are the most common) If this does not help with pain and inflammation, I would suggest Step 2.
Step 2. Go on an elimination diet for 3 weeks or 21 days. Remove the "big 5" most common food allergens. These include; gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, corn. After 21 days, add one food back in every 2 or 3 days and watch for reactions. If you know there are foods that are giving you trouble but can't figure out which ones consider Step 3.
Step 3. IgG Delayed Food Sensitivity Testing: This is a blood spot test that will test 96 foods to see which show an immune response. This can be done at home or in our office. Depending on the results, remove the offending foods for 2 - 4 months (depending on severity) and then try returning them to your diet slowly, one at a time. This test has about a 2 week turnaround. If there are more than 5 allergens that test positive, you may consider inquiring about our leaky gut protocol while the offending foods are out of your diet to help reduce the stress on the immune/inflammatory system.
